Abstract

Hydrogels are aquasorb-based polymer crystals with the ability to absorb or hold water as much as 400 times the weight of the hydrogel. In essence, hydrogels are one type of hydrophilic polymeric macromolecules in the form of three-dimensional tissue with cross-bonds. This study aims to analyze the mechanical properties of chitosan-glutathione hydrogel by adding banana stem extract. The study of mechanical properties carried out includes analysis of FTIR test functional groups based on formed cross bonds, viscosity analysis and analysis of tensile strength and elasticity. Based on the results of the study, it was obtained that the extract of 5000 gr of banana frond extraction method obtained by the method of yield of 13.74% with specific gravity of EPP with 3 times the application of 1,2946484 gr / V. The biggest viscosity is 3465.74 centiPoise in hydrogels with the addition of banana stem extract at a concentration of 5%. While based on FTIR Peak test the characteristics of chitosan-glutathione hydrogels showed stretching bands of carbonyl bonds (1617.81 cm-1), hydroxyl bonds (3284.48 cm- 1) and sulfhidryl bonds (2919.72 cm-1). The largest modulus young value was found in Chitosan-Glutathione hydrogel after the addition of banana midrib extract at a concentration of 1%, amounting to 4,5088 GPa. With the addition of banana stem extract to chitosan-glutathione hydrogel as reinforcement material it produces better mechanical properties compared to chitosan-glutathione hydrogel before adding banana midrib extract. So that chitosan-glutathione hydrogel from banana stem extract can be used as one of the options as a potential material for the application of medical sewing threads from natural materials.
