Abstract
Zn-based biodegradable metals (BMs) are considered as new potential in osteosynthetic implant devices. However, Zn has quite low hardness. In present study, Ca, an essential element of human body, is used to increase the hardness of Zn. Alloy powders were processed by the methode of powder metallurgy with two different processing: cold pressing followed by sintering (CP-S) and hot isostatic pressing (HIP). Mechanical properties, microstructure, and in vitro degradation and corrosion were studied to determine the effect of the addition of Ca. Variation of the sample consisted of Zn-0.5Ca, Zn-1Ca, Zn-1.5Ca and Zn-2Ca. The results and analysis of test data indicate that the addition of Ca increases microstructure hardness and the rate of corrosion and degradation. Better bonding and microstructure properties were obtained in Zn-2Ca sample which formed the CaZn13 phase and small porosity. Hardness of prepared materials by HIP processing is better than materials by CP-S. This is caused by the bond between particles in HIP easier to obtain when the pressure is given simultaneously with the temperature.
