Abstract

Being career woman is not a new thing nowadays, but that does not mean that being career woman is without barriers, especially in male-dominated world. This condition is what we will see in John Madden’s Miss Sloane (2016). Miss Sloane tells about a professional and highly competent female lobbyist who has lost her career in order to achieve a bigger victory. This research will analyze how Liz, the protagonist, represents career woman in the movie. This study uses Simone de Beauvoir theory in her book, The Second Sex, to examine the woman position toward men in workforce. The focus of this research is about the representation of career women through the analysis of Liz’s characterization, her career life and how people see her. The method used is qualitative approach, by analyzing the narrative and the non-narrative aspects of the movie. This study shows that in doing her Job, Liz breaks the old gender stereotype by sharing masculine traits. This movie gives the portrayal of woman who has the power over herself and her environment.
