Abstract

This article attempts to discuss how nature is represented through poetry.There are many representations of nature in many literary studies. However, many of them connects the issue with theories such as ecocriticism and green studies. The writer would like to present a study that focus only on the poem itself to see the representation of nature within it. It is interesting to study a literary work to find what is the underlying meaning it has, and that became the reason the writer chose to conduct this study. Nature is frequently ridiculed over the years and considered not important. People only consider nature to be dangerous when a natural disaster occurred like earthquake. But after the disaster, people sometimes forget about the ferocious side of nature, and nature is again looked down. This study aims to reveal the representation of nature in Robert Frost’s “Design”. New Criticism will be applied in this study and the method used will be close reading. This study will analyze the representation of nature that is shown from the symbols inside the poem. The results show thatnature has more different sides than what people already know. The results also show that there is no coincidence in nature, and nature is the very possibility of governing the system of universe.
