Abstract

Background: Preterm labor is one of the biggest direct cause of neonatal death. The cause of preterm labor is determined by various risk factors. In 2005-2015, East Java’s Baby Mortality Rate was in stagnant at 30/1000. This study was carried out by analyzing the effect of mother’s age, parity, preterm labor history, multiple pregnancy and pregnancy complications on the incidence of preterm labor. Method: This study used case control method with a retrospective approach using medical records as the data source. The population were mothers who did labor in RSUD Dr. M. Soewandhi in 2017. The sample consisted of 130 medical records with 1:1 ratio of case and control. Data analysis was carried out by Chi-Square, Fisher’s Exact Test, Odds Ratio and Multivariate Logistic Regression statistical tests. Result: Based on the analysis, the majority of preterm labor were from mother who were Javanese, aged 20-35 years old and multiparous. The bivariate analysis showed significant relationship between mother’s age (p=0,004), preterm labor history (p=0,006) and pregnancy complications (p<0,001) with the incidence of preterm labor. While mother’s parity (p=0,777) and multiple pregnancy (p=0,119) were not significantly related with preterm labor incidence. Based on multivariate analysis, mothers aged <20 and >35 years old were at risk of 3,510 (95% CI 1,481-8,230) and mothers who had pregnancy complications were at risk of 5,203 (95% CI 2,248-12,040) times of having preterm labor. Conclusion: Mother’s age, pregnancy complications, and history of previous preterm labor were the risk factor of preterm labor. These three factors should be given special attention while assessing pregnancy so that the preterm labor can be handled well or even be eliminated.
