Abstract

Background: Social media has recently become an access point to gather information on plastic reconstructive and aesthetic surgery and as an alternative method to emphasize medical students’ knowledge about this field. Plastic surgeons can use social media for knowledge transfer, and their presence on social media is increasing. However, the role of plastic surgeons in social media is unknown. Aims: We aimed to determine the role of plastic surgeons’ social media on medical students’ knowledge regarding plastic reconstructive and aesthetic surgery. Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on third, fourth, and fifth year medical students. The independent variable was to follow the status of medical students on plastic surgeons’ social media and the presence of plastic surgeons on university teaching staff. The dependent variable was medical students’ knowledge about plastic surgery as measured by vignette. Data were analyzed using a chi square test.
