Abstract

Varanus salvator is a reptile animal that is often being hunted by humans for various purposes. The hunting of water monitor is free to do until now, and one day can be threaten the extinction of the population if it done without the preservation of conservation. Knowledge of the reproductive system of water monitor is needed as the base for conservation. The objective of this research was to find out about the histology of cartilage in hemipenis of male Varanus salvator or commonly known as water monitor based on the measurement with Snout Vent Length (SVL). Sampling was done randomly and used hemipenis organs from 18 water monitor which divided into two groups: water monitor with SVL> 40 cm, and water monitor with SVL <40 cm and seen histologically in the cartilage part on gland hemipenis. The object calculated is the area of chondrocyte cells in cartilage. The cartilage on water monitor’s hemipenis has been known as Hemibaculum and it is composed by hyaline cartilage and fibrous cartilage. The observation on the microscope used one slice organ for each micros slide sample. Data analysis using Simple Regression Linear test, and the result of this test is the changes in the area of chondrocyte cells are caused by the changes in SVL.
