Abstract

Hypertension is one of the most causes of premature death in the world often called as “sillent killer”. Hypertension is a chronic disease that requires long term therapy, so adherence in the treatment of hypertension is very important. Adherence to therapy is required to control blood pressure and reduce the risk of complication. One of the way to improve the adherence of patients is by giving written information and/or verbally. The aim of this study was to determine the effect of therapeutic information to improve adherence in hypertensive patients. The ARMS and pill count instruments were used to measure adherence of pharmacological therapy and lifestyle questionnaires to measure adherence of non-pharmacological therapies. This study was a quasi experimental study with pre and post control group design at Dukuh Kupang Community Health Center Surabaya. The adherence measurement was performed in seventy hipertensive patients, were randomized to be divided into control and treatment group (n=35). The results show that there was an effect of giving information in adherence measured by the ARMS questionnaire (p = 0.000), with the lifestyle questionnaire (p = 0.000) and the pill count method (p = 0.018) which indicates significant differences between the control group and the treatment group.
