Abstract

Background: Every child grows in accordance to their stages of age. The process is natural but highly dependent on older people, in particular the mother. Mother is the key person in achieving proper development in children. One of the factors that influence the development is mother’s knowledge concerning the actual process of child development. Health counseling to the mother is one option to maintain the children’s health, to monitor their development and so forth things related to the child. Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze the influence of health counseling concerning mothers’ practice in filling mother and child health handbook to stimulation and development in children aged 0-3 years in Tambak Health Center, Bawean Island, Gresik Regency. Methods: This study applied quasi-experimental pretest - posttest group design, with provision of health counseling as intervention. This study was conducted in Tambak Health Center in Bawean Island for 3 months, with overall sample consisted of 60 mothers with children aged 0-3 years, divided into 30 each in the treatment and the control groups. Questionnaires were utilized and analysis was done using the Mann-whiney Test. Results: The results of statistical test indicated significant value of p ​​(p> 0.05) meaning that stimulation provided no difference between the treatment and control groups, but there was a downward trend that occurred every month, with the first month (p = 0.937), the second month (p = 0.289) and the third month (p = 0.213). In the other hand, development provided the influence with value of p <0.05. Conclusion: The provision of health counseling did not provide optimal stimulation provided by the mothers, but there was monthly increase in the stimulation of the children. There were also some changes in children’s development according to stage of age of children on the third month.
