Abstract

Canine dystocia is a common problem that increases the risk of mortality to the dam and stillbirths for the pups. The cause of dystocia could be due of two factors: maternal factor and fetal factor. Understanding the risk factors for dystocia and stillbirth can help guide decision making to improve outcomes of whelping management. The purpose of this study was to exploring by the case study of dystocia at canine in Animal Hospital of Universitas Airlangga that happen in period of 2016-2018 and to determinate predisposing factors that affect the incidence of dystocia including breed, age, weight, and parity. Data of dystocia cases of canine were obtained from medical records of the Animal Hospital of Universitas Airlangga in period of 2016-2018. The results showed the incidence based on number of dam that treated during period 2016-2018 was 18.5%, with details in 2016 was 8.8%, in 2017 was 3.9%, and while in 2018 was 5.9%. On another factors, the highest result on breed factor was Chihuahua, 3-6 years on age factor, 3 years primiparous bitch on parity factor and weight ± 3kg on weight factor. Lack of mating information about the risky breed, age, parity and weight increasing case of dystocia can happen. In this case, breed and age factor was the highest issues that can occur dystocia happens in the future.
