Abstract
There is increasing awareness that a substantial proportion of small, solid renal masses are benign neoplasms. Although imaging can be used to diagnose most of solid renal masses, some are incorrectly believed to represent renal cell carcinoma and unnecessary surgery may be performed. advances in ultrasonography, CT-Scan (Computerized Tomography Scanning), and MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging) technology allow accurate differentation between solid and cystic lesions, the ability of imaging to differentiate benign from malignant renal masses remains limited (Li G, et al 2004). Tissue diagnosis may be needed to direct therapy and potentially to avoid unnecessary nephrectomies. Renal biopsy is an essential tool for the diagnosis of several renal diseases. Based on advances in cytological techniques, percutaneous biopsy can be now be used to diagnose benign neoplasms and thus prevent them from being treated unnecessarily.
