Abstract

Dementia is a term that used to describe a progressive cognitive impairment and affect daily activity of elderly. Elderly with demensia need extra caring and continuous guiding by family member. Taking care elderly with dementia can make burden to family member as caregiver, it called caregiver burden consist of physical burden, psichology burden, social burden and economy burden. The purpose of this research is to know correlation between severity of dementia and caregiver burden in family member who taking care elderly with dementia in Balong, Ponorogo. Design used in this study was correlation that applied cross sectional approach. The population was family member who taking care of elderly with dementia and sampling technique used was purposive sampling. Total sample was 23 respondent taken according to inclusion and exclusion criteria. The independent variable was the severity of dementia and dependent variable was caregiver burden in family who taking care elderly with dementia. Data were collected using structured quistionnaire then analyzed by spearmen rank correlation with level of significance of < 0,05. Result showed that the severity of dementia have correlation with caregiver burden in family member who taking care elderly with dementia (ρ = 0,000). The conclusion is more severity of dementia can make caregiver burden heavier. Further studies should be done to find appropriate interventions to family member who taking care elderly with dementia so it can minimalize cargiver burdenly
