Abstract

As many as 20% of stroke patients is often accompanied by complications of infection, it’s called stroke associated infection, in which the urinary tract infection and pneumonia are the most types of infections. Stroke associated infection (SAI) is defined as a symptom of infection arising during the period of 5 days after the occurrence of stroke. This study aims to determine the pattern of cephalosporin therapy used in patients with ischemic stroke assosciated infection. Based on a prospective study research for 3 months in three stroke inpatient rooms at Dr.Soetomo general hospital, a total of 15 patients included in the sample inclusion criteria fieldwork. Risk factors for infection in patients, either medical history or medical treatment, were diabetes mellitus, TB, infection in first attack stroke, nasogastric tube, catheter, and infus. The infection type that found in this study were UTI, pneumonia, and bacterial infection. Ceftriaxone is the most widely used patient as empirical antibiotics 2x1 grams i.v (80%) for 6-10 days (72%). Actual and potential DRP found during the study were untreated indication, drug interactions, and the alleged side effects. Microbiological cultures taken on 7 patients. The result 5 patients were found in bacterial cultures of specimens blood, urine, and pus. Infection-causing bacteria are Gram negative (66.6%) and Gram positive (33.4%).
