Abstract

Treatment of brain edema and other neurological deficits in brain tumor patients are important as those problems can lead to an increase in intracranial pressure. Glucocorticoid have been used for decades in treatment of brain tumor patients and belong to most powerful class of agents in reducing tumor-associated edema. Unfortunately, corticosteroids are associated with numerous and well-characterized adverse effects, constituting a major challenge in patients requiring long-term use of corticosteroid. Thus, this study was conducted to indentify the usage of corticosteroid in brain tumor patients particularly on dosage, the tapering pattern, and drug related problems, at Room A, IRNA Neurological Department of Dr. Soetomo Hospital Surabaya from period January to December 2011. Data’s was collected using retrospective method and were analysed descriptively. From this study, it is known that dexamethasone and methylprednisolone were the types of corticosteroid used to treat brain tumor patiens. In this study, dose that been used were 20 mg/day, 15 mg/day and 7,5 mg/day. Dose were tapered gradually after several day of use to reduce the possibility of adrenal suppression and side effects. Drug related problems identified in this study were potential interaction between drugs used during brain tumor therapy and side effects of corticosteroid. The side effects were increase in blood glucose, electrolyte imbalance, psycathric disturbance and infections. Other therapy used in brain tumor also been discussed in this study.
