Abstract

Stress ulcer also referred to stress related mucosal damage (SRMD). It is a damage of membrane that happened in the upper gastro intestinal tract and significant cause of morbidity and mortality in critical ill patients. The patophysiology of stress ulcer is believed to be multi factorial and not completely understood. It involves a complex set that causes a breakdown of the mucosal protective defences, allowing aggressive physiological factors to produce ulceration. Phophylaxis of stress ulcer are recommended because on going ulcer can cause haemorrhage and patient with haemorrhage has a big chance to mortality. The pharmacological therapy for stress ulcer are H2-Antagonist, PPI and sucralfate. Observation research using retrospective data has been done to find out the usage of stress ulcer propylaxis in patient with brain injury at Dr. Soetomo Surabaya general hospital. The sampel of the research was 92 patients of the hospital. The result showed that H2-Antagonist which is ranitidine is a prophylaxis stress ulcer that mostly used in the cases. H2-Antagonist are more commonly used compared to sucralfate and PPI in preventing GIT bleeding caused by stress ulcer considering it’s effectivity, security profile and easiness of usage. Phrophylaxis is given through intravenous route and per orally forwarded in cosideration of the patients clinical condition.
