Abstract

Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) is a cancer that came from liver cell. About 40%-95% from all patients that diagnosed HCC was reported experiencing pain in right upper abdomen. If the pain not be treated with the right therapy as soon as possible, it can significantly interfere with the quality of life of patients and can delay treatment that must be done. Problems that arise related to the use of pain treatment are varied clinical outcomes in HCC patients. The purpose of this study was to assess the pattern of pain treatment in HCC patients. The prospective descriptive observational study was done to the HCC patients using pain treatment at Department of Internal Medicine Dr. Ramelan Naval Hospital Surabaya during April 2th to July 19th 2012 with the total number of samples is 9 patients. This study indicate that 78% patients experiencing pain. The most widely used pain treatment is morphine (29%) and fentanyl (43%). Drug regimentation for pain treatment variously in every patients because of individual response. Clinical outcomes for 56% patients is changes in the level of pain. Drug related problems (DRPs) that could be found in this study were drug interaction and drug side effect.
