Abstract

Diclofenac sodium is usually used in the long therapy of rheumatoid arthitis. Diclofenac sodium has antiinflamation, analgesic and antipiretic activity. Diclofenac sodium is formulated in topical dosage form to avoid the side effect from oral, intramuscular and suppository dosage form. The partition coefficient of diclofenac sodium is 13.4, so it tends to be lipophilic and solubility of diclofenac sodium in water is too small. The amount of diclofenac sodium molecules that can penetrate to stratum corneum is low, so the permeability of skin is low and the penetration diclofenac sodium is not optimal. Therefore, diclofenac sodium is formulated in niosomes system to increase the bioavailability. This research is to observe the antiinflamatory activity of niosomes system and compositions of niosomes system are; diclofenac sodium : Span 20 : cholesterol (1:6:6) and diclofenac sodium : Span 60 : cholesterol (1:6:6) by Carragenan induced hind paw edema on Wistar rats. The evaluation consists of organoleptic test (form, color and odor), pH, morphologic test (Scanning Electron Microscopy) and drug entrapment efficiency and antiinflamatory activity.
