Abstract

Cataract is one of the most common causes of blindness that characterised by a clouding of the lens of the eye which prevents clear vision. Corticosteroid is used to control and prevent the inflammation after cataract surgery through topical and oral route. The purpose of this study is to identify the chatacteristics of post-operative cataract patients, identify the drug related problem in corticosteroid therapy and evaluate outcome of corticosteroid therapy for patient after cataract surgery at Surabaya Eye Clinic. Data was collected retrospectively and analyzed descriptively from patients’ medication record who included in inclusion criteria from January 1st 2017 to December 31st 2018 with time limited sampling method. Data was analized by literature review methods about clinical pharmaceutical treatment for patients with cataract surgery and collaboration with clinician. The result of this study on 288 eye of 254 patients received dexamethasone (67.79%), fluorometholone (10.58%), methyl prednisolone (16.58%), hydrocortisone (4.33%), and prednisolone (0.72%) with 81.25% by topical and 18.75% by oral route. Most of the patient are women (56.69%) in range of age 61 – 70 years old (45.67%). All of the patient showed a good outcome of corticosteroid therapy with 5.21% patients got increase of the intraocular pressure as the adverse drug reaction of corticosteroid topical. Based on the above explanation, the utilization of corticosteroid in post-operative cataract patients requires a right consideration in achieving a desired outcome. Therefore, it is necessary to have a good medical collaboration between doctor and pharmacist to prevent the drug related problems in corticosteroid after cataract surgery.
