Abstract

operating parameters of a laboratory spray dryer to optimise the production of ketoprofen-carboxymethyl chitosan microparticle. Process parameters studied were inlet temperature (80○C, 100○C, 120○C) and pump feed rate (3.5 ml/minute and 9.0 ml/minute). Thus, there was six type of treatment and each was triplicate. Resulting microparticles were characterised in terms of yield, physical characteristic (particle size; shape and surface morphology), and entrapment efficiency. A 2x3 factorial design of experiment was undertaken. At a 99% confidence interval, the main effect of inlet temperature showed on yield and entrapment efficiency, but the main effect of pump feed rate and the interaction effect among of them only showed on yield. Besides, particle size was influenced by inlet temperature and pump feed rate. From the result of SEM, it was known that all microparticles has hollow and nonspherical shape. Narrow distribution of particle size and good entrapment efficiency were showed from all of the type of treatment, however inlet temperature at 100○C and pump feed rate at 9.0 ml/minute was predicted to be the optimum condition for these microparticles production with SD-Basic Lab Plant UK Ltd, since the drying process was relatively faster and it could produce the most yield.
