Abstract

Formaldehyde solution, or commonly called formalin, an illegal food additive, was still widely found in the market as a food preservative. In the traditional markets in the center of Surabaya, formalin were suspected found. Therefore, in order to monitor whether there was formalin in a foodstuff, qualitative as well as quantitative test are needed, chromotropic acid in concentrated sulfuric acid will produce the colour of red purple if react with formalin. Standardization of formalin obtained the concentration of formaldehyde was 36,60%. The result showed that the maximum wavelength of complex formaldehyde and chromotropic acid was 567,5 nm. The linear regression equation was y = 0.2235 x + 0.0142 with a correlation coefficient (r) of 0.9956. Detection limit and Quantitation limit were 0,156 ppm and 0,521 ppm, respectively. Percent (%) recovery was (77,43±7,342) %. The method was applied for determination of formalin in the chicken meat which were taken from the Center of Surabaya’s markets shows were not detected in all of samples.
