Abstract

Introduction: Complementary management for diabetes mellitus is corn silk (Zea mays L) and alkaline water. This research was carried out to introduce the herbal formula of corn silk which was dissolved into water containing high hydrogen compounds (alkaline water). The purpose of this study was to explain the differences in decreasing blood sugar and increasing insulin in experimental animals with hyperglycemic models who were given ethanol extracts of watersoluble and alkaline-soluble corn silk. Method: This type of research is true experimental with post-test only group design. The research sample consisted of 36 male mice which were divided into four groups. The dependent variable is fasting blood sugar level, 2-hour blood sugar level PP, and insulin level. The independent variable was ethanol extract of water-soluble and alkaline alkali corn hair. The instruments used in this study were glucose test and ELISA reader. The ethanol extract of corn silk was given for 2 weeks at a dose of 2.52 mg/kg given once a day in the hyperglycemic model group that was treated, namely groups three and four. Data analysis using ANOVA. Results and Analysis: Calculation of difference (Δ) fasting blood sugar and 2 hours PP after administration of ethanol extracts of watersoluble and alkaline soluble corn hair despite experiencing a difference in the decrease in the mean range but after the different test with Kruskal Wallis did not have a significant difference. The increase in insulin levels in the hyperglycemic group treated was almost the same as in the normal group, which was 0.387 ml. Discussion and Conclusions: Giving ethanol extracts of alkali-soluble corn hair can be used as an alternative choice in supporting pharmacological therapy of DM to increase insulin levels.
