Abstract

Self-medication is one of the ways to relief illness symptomps. There are many disadvantages of self medication, such as medication error, drug misuse, and drug abuse. The aim of this research is to know self medication profile of pharmacies consumers in East Surabaya. This study is a descriptive research. Questionares were given to 100 respondents who spreaded in randomly selected 36 pharmacies in East Surabaya. The respondents were selected by purposive sampling. The research’s variabels were predisposition factor, enabling factor, reinforcing factor, selection of medicines, and use of medicines. Data were analyzed descriptively by using Microsoft Office Excel. Results showed most respondents who did self medication were women (60%), most respondents were 41 until 50 years old(26%). The biggest three symptoms choosen most by respondents were tired (19%), flu/colds (15%), and peptic ulcer (11%), then the most action toward to relief the symptom were buying drugs in pharmacy (54%), the most reason for choosing the pharmacy was because near home (60%). According to the result, most respondents choose the price of drugs they purchase relatively inexpensive (58%). It was known that the largest source of drug information is from family/ neighbors/friends(33%). The reason for choosing medicine was because respondents used to use the drug (46%). The result demonstrated more than 50 % respondents come to the pharmacy for self medication so that the role of pharmacists are needed in self medication service to avoid mistakes in selecting and using medicine
