Abstract

Generic drugs contains the same active ingredients, the same dosage strength, safe, equally effective and therefore interchangeble with an original brand name drug. However, the use of generic drug is still low because the patient's perception on generic drugs. This research investigated the perception of patients on the use of generic drugs in general hospital (RSU Haji Surabaya). Perception is a structured process of introduction, selection, and experience. The aim of this research was to find out patient’s perception on the used of generic drugs in general hospital (RSU Haji Surabaya). The data of this description were collected by questionnaire from 100 purposively sampled patients who visited the internist. Data were analyzed descriptively using SPSS. The result could be seen into three variables, in introduction variable that most of the patient knew that generic drugs have a low price 53% and patient knew generic drugs from medical workers 70%. The second variable was selection, patient choose to use generic drugs as prescribed 54%. In experience variable, patients feel efficacious when using generic drugs 76% and no side effects 81%. Patients also find it easy to find a generic drug 96%. Patients were also more likely to use generics 47%.
