Abstract

The high inclination of medication use among elderly draws high potential drug related problems. The aim of this research was to describe medication use of the elderly including drug, dietary supplement, herbal medicines and potential drug interaction of the medication. Cross sectional study conducted by in-home interview in March-April 2012 to 76 elderly of 200 elderly member of Matahari Elderly Community. The elderly were 60 years old or more and were selected by purposive sampling. Questionnaire was designed as the instrument to obtain data of products used by elderly in the preceding week. The result shows that 85,5% of the respondent used drugs in the preceeding week which were consisted of 127 prescription drugs (64,5% ) -of them 25 drugs (19,7%) were unidentified- and 70 non-prescription drugs (35,5%). Among 58 drug users (76,3%), 14 respondents (24,1%) took dietary supplement,19 (32,8%) respondents took herbal medicine, and 5 respondents (8,6%) took herbal medicine and dietary supplement concurently. Four moderate prescription drug potential interactions were found from 3 respondents (6,5%). The data shows it is prominent for pharmacists to take more role in elderly’s medication for better quality of life.
