Abstract
Each year, 44% of child mortality in the world occurs during neonatal period, where infection is the leading cause of death in the developing countries. Hospitalized neonates are in risk of developing nosocomial sepsis, a systemic inflammation due to unhygienic healthcare. Hand hygiene by healthcare workers is an effective measure to prevent it. One way to strengthen good hand hygiene practice is through hand hygiene education. The research aimed to understand the effect of hand hygiene education on healthcare worker’s hand hygiene compliance and nosocomial sepsis incidence rate. This research was a quasi-experimental with one group pre-test post–test test design. Intervention in the form of hand hygiene education for healthcare workers (doctors and nurses) of Emergency Departement NICU, conducted by Dr. Soetomo Hospital Infection Control Team on February 12th, 2019. Pre-test and post-test period were conducted 2 months before and after the hand hygiene education. Healthcare workers hand hygiene compliance data was obtained from direct observation, while nosocomial sepsis incidence rate was obtained from patient’s medical record. Observation results were analyzed with chi square test. Emergency Departement NICU healthcare workers’ hand hygiene compliance showed a significant increase (p=<0,05), from 79% during pre-test to 88% during post-test. But, the increase in hand hygiene compliance was not accompanied by a significant change in nosocomial sepsis rate (p=0,814). Hand hygiene education increased healthcare worker’s hand hygiene compliance but did not significantly affect nosocomial sepsis incidence rate in Dr. Soetomo Hospital Emergency Department NICU. Some other factors that affect nosocomial incidence rate so integrated intervention is needed to improve control over nosocomial infection.
