Abstract

Many patients use household spoon to measure liquid medicines. household spoons come in different sizes and are not meant for measuring medicines. Incorrect use of measuring devices can lead to measurement errors thereby potentially overdose or underdose exist.The aim of this study was to determine the profile of liquid cough medicine This research method is based on the type of research include descriptive survey with cross sectional approach. This research was done by using a non-random and purposive sampling were carried out including in Pharmacy 325 Surabaya in November 2014. Sample size was 30 patients who bought self-medication liquid cough medicine. Data were collected using the semi-structured interviews. The results showed that the respondents not only have a cough alone but each respondent has a combination of different symptomps. Patient with one and two symptomps share the same amount 33.33% (10 respondents) for each categories. Productive cough share the largest number of symptom in 20% patients (6 respondents). Majority of the respondents (66,67%, n=20) experienced inappropriate choosing cough medicine due to self-diagnosed error. The conclusion is a total of 90% (20 respondents) that uses liquid cough medicine does not fit in the accurated doses. Pharmacists have an oppurtinity to counsel patients or caregiver about drug use.
