Abstract

Providing drug information for patient is an important role of pharmacist. Information for patient with hyperuricemia who received allopurinol goes beyond information concerning drug use. Information regarding food, life style and common adverse drug reactions should also be given. The aim of the study was to describe the profile of drug information provided by pharmacy staff for patient with allopurinol prescription in community pharmacies in Surabaya A new prescription was presented in each pharmacy and simulated patient method was used to assess pharmacies performance in providing drug information regarding allopurinol. Ninety pharmacies were chose n by simple random sampling method and simulated patient with trained actor was used to obtain the data. A designed instrument namely patient’s data, prescription, study protocol, and checklist were use to collect the data. Result showed that 94.4% (85) ph armacies gave allopurinol. About 40.0% (34) of pharmacies gave information about frequency of administration, however 2.9 % (1) of the information given was wrong. Only 8.2% (8) gave information regarding the number of drug in one administration, and 4.7 % (4) gave information about time of administration (after, during, or before meal) to prevent nausea and vomiting. The information about the time of administration (morning, afternoon, or evening) and advice that allopurinol should be taken with plenty of water, only given by 2.4% (2) pharmacy staffs. None of the pharmacy staff gave information about adverse drug reaction and allergy. It can be concluded that information mostly given to the patient was the frequency of drug administration. The provision of drug information toward patient who obtained allopurinol with prescription at pharmacies in Surabaya was very low.
