Abstract

Meningoencephalitis is an inflam mation in the membranes and the parenchim of brain. The disease is a me dical emergency that requires urgent administration of antibiotics. This st udy was aimed to analyze the usage of antibiotics on meningoencephalitis patient in Dr. Soetomo Hospital Surabaya period January 1, 2010 – December 31, 2010. The study was retrospective using data from 30 patient’s medical records an d was analyzed descriptively. The result showed that most of meningoencephalitis occured on patient in the average age of 15-29 years 50%, and was dominated by male 60%. The most common symptoms and sign of meningoencephalitis were fever, decrease of c onscious, and neck stiffness. The diagnosis of meningoence phalitis obtained by clinical patient’s condition, lumbal puncture’s data, and CT scan’s data. About 26 patients received ceftriaxone intravenous 2 gram every 12 hours, and 3 pati ents received antibiotics combination of ceftriaxone 2 gram every 8-12 hours and metronidazole 500 mg every 8 hours. Other antib iotics were intravenous ceftazidime, intravenous meropenem, intravenous fosfomycin, intravenous levofloxacin, intravenous metronidazole. In this study, the duration of treatment can’t appropriate with the literature. In literature, the duration of antibiotics th erapy were about 7-21 days, but in this study, the duration of antibiotics therapy were about 4-35 days
