Abstract

Curcumin is a yellow pigment. It is the main compound of turmeric and usually extracted from Curcuma L. plant. This compound has been commonly utilized in the medical field due to its various therapy effects. However, curcumin has several problematic properties. Its solubility and permeation factor is so low that it is classified as IV class BCS. These problems can be handled by creating a solid dispersion that adsorbed into adsorbent surface. The purpose of this research was to increase the dissolution rate of curcumin by creating solid dispersion system of curcumin-PVP K-30 which is then adsorbed into primogel surface with ratio of curcumin, PVP K-30, and primogel is 1:1:2. The solid dispersion system was created by solvent method and evaluated using dissolution test. The dissolution of the samples was studied, using dissolution apparatus II (USP) paddle method. The dissolution medium was 900 ml of 0,5% SLS in water, maintained at 37±0,5ºC. The stirring speed was 50 rpm. For comparison purpose the dissolution test was also performed on: solid dispersion curcumin-PVP K-30, curcumin-primogel surface adsorbtion, and physical mixture and pure curcumin. The results showed that the solid dispersion curcumin-PVP K-30 adsorbed in the primogel surface had the highest dissolution rate.
