Abstract

Curcumin is a polyphenolic compound derived from dietary spice turmeric. Curcumin possesses diverse pharmacologic effects including antiinflammatory, antioxidant, antiproliferative and antiangiogenic activities. Curcumin is known as water insoluble pharmaceutical ingredients. The poor solubility and wettability of curcumin lead to poor dissolution hence showing poor bioavailability. Methods that can be used in order to increase the dissolution rate of curcumin is by using the combination solid disperse technique and surface adsorption. The aim of this study is to determine the influence of LHPC LH-11 as adsorbent in kurkumin solid dispersion with PEG 8000 in this dissolution rate. The system used in this study was a solid disperse of curcumin made by the addition of PEG 8000 as hydrophilic polymer and LHPC LH-11 as adsorbent. Solid dispersions of curcumin-PEG 8000 (1:1) were prepared by solvent method, and then adsorbed on to LHPC LH-11. Dissolution test were performed in five systems, surface solid dispersions of curcumin-PEG 8000-LHPC LH-11 with ratio (1:1:2), solid dispersion of curcumin-PEG 8000 (1:1), surface adsorption of curcumin on to LHPC LH-11 (1:2), physical mixture of curcumin-PEG 8000-LHPC LH-11 with ratio (1:1:2), and pure curcumin in 0,5% SLS in water media. It was found that the dissolution rate of surface solid dispersion of curcumin-PEG 8000-LHPC LH-11 with ratio (1:1:2) was significantly higher than the other systems. It can be concluded that combination technique of solid dispersion and surface adsorption could improve the dissolution rate of curcumin.
