Abstract

Marsilea crenata Presl. is one of the plants in Indonesia that commonly used as food. M. crenata Presl. is potential to prevent osteoporosis. Before further investigation of the potential benefits that can be developed from M. crenata Presl., research needs to be done to get data of the anatomy, morphology, and contents of the chemical compounds. This examination is needed to avoid possible mistakes in taking the plant and to avoid possible false crude drug. The result showed that M. crenata Presl. is a herb that grows in freshwater environments such as ricefield, has compound leaves that consists of four leaves, green, smooth feathers on the surface. The leaves will close in the evening and open again in the morning. M. crenata Presl. has brown stolon and brown hairy roots. Result from microscopical anatomy found anisocytic stomata with three or more neighbouring cells in different size on the upper and lower epidermis, multicelluler trichomes, volatile oil drops, xylem with spiral-form thickening. The stem and stolon have paracytic stomata, volatile oil drops, and multicelluler thrichomes on the epidermis cell, xylem with spiral-form thickening, and amphicribal vascular bundle. Phytochemical screening showed that M. crenata Presl. contains polyphenol, free steroids, saponins, and volatile oils compounds.
