Abstract

The aim of this research is to determine the influence of methoxy group in para position of benzaldehyde on synthesis chalcone and 4- methoxychalcone by comparing the yields of synthesis. The synthesis of both compounds were carried under microwave irradiation with the same condition and the structures were confirmed by UV-Vis spectrophotometry, IR spectrophotometry, and 1H-NMR spectrometry. Chalcone is pale yellow crystal (1,72%± 0,03) and its melting point is 51°C while 4-methoxychalcone is pale more intensive yellow crystal (5,21 ± 0,18 %) which has melting point 73°C. From the synthesisyields of both compounds can be determined that methoxy group in para positionof benzaldehyde can increased the synthesis yield of 4- methoxychalcone. The synthesisyields of both compounds were poor due to low degree of catalyst purity (Bentonite), that caused incomplete reaction conditions can be happenned.
