Abstract

Chalcone and its derivate have been synthesized by cross aldol condensation reaction. The aim of this research is to determine the influence of methoxy substituent of ortho-methoxybenzaldehyde on the synthesis of 1-phenyl-3-(2-methoxyphenyl)-2-propen-1-one. From the result, it can be concluded that methoxy group at ortho position increased the density of electron in aromatic ring of benzaldehyde and turn into more reactive so that the formation of aldol product increasing which the yield of chalcone was 59,8% while 1-phenyl-3-(2-methoxyphenyl)-2-propen-1-one was 85,9%. The reaction was conducted at room temperature for an hour. The products were yielded as yellow crystals with melting point 55°C and 58°C for chalcone and 1-phenyl-3-(2-methoxyphenyl)-2-propen-1-on, respectively. The crude products were purified by recrystallization by ethanol. The chemical structures of both compounds were identified by UV, IR, and 1H-NMR spectroscopy. The statistical analysis showed that the methoxy substituent gave a significant effect in increasing the percentage of synthesis product.
