Abstract

Family’s involvement is getting bigger when one member needs a continuous help because of a health problem. Family, as the most closed people for the patient has very important roles in the TB treatment. This research aimed to find out the family authority in taking care of its member with TB. Method: This research used qualitative method with etnographic approach. There were 15 participants selected purposively as the samples of this research. Data were collected through interviews, FGD, field note and observation. The result of the interview was analized using content analysis method. Result of the research : the result of the research showed 7 themes, i.e frame of reference, experience, support source, support forms, stressors, coping mechanism and stigma. Family authority level was in the lowest category, i.e. the Independent Family Level I. Conclusion : Families’ perspective towards TB showed the lack of knowledge about TB, the cause, spread and prevention of TB in the family. Families supported TB medication program of the member, but the lack of resources made them unable to optimize the support. Having members with TB and the long period of medication became stressor for the families. Coping mechanisms used by the families were adaptive and maladaptive coping mechanisms. The social label of TB sufferer and the strong stigma in the society about TB made the patients and their families feel isolated, and unconciously, excommunication occurred in the families. This caused the family’s authority in the Level I (the lowest). Keywords: tuberculosis, family, family autonomy, health treatment
