Abstract

Tic and myoclonus are involuntary movement disorders, but the first is suppressible while the later is non suppressible. Myoclonus describes a symptom and generally is not a diagnosis of a disease. It refers to sudden, involuntary jerking of a muscle or group of muscles, vairable in intensity and frequency. Myoclonic twitches or jerks usually are caused by sudden muscle contractions, called positive myoclonus, or by muscle relaxation, called negative myoclonus.Myoclonic jerks may occur alone or in sequence, in a pattern or without pattern. They may occur infrequently or many times each minute. Myoclonus sometimes occurs in response to an external event or when a person attempts to make a movement. The twitching cannot be controlled by the person experiencing it. Tic is a nonvoluntary body movement or vocal sound that is made repeatedly, rapidly, suddenly and suppressible. It has a stereotyped but nonrhythmic character. Tics are type of dyskinesia, which is the general medical term given to impairments or distortions of voluntary movements. Although tics vary considerably in severity, they are associated with several neuropsychiatric disorders in children and adolescents. Tics management is including education and medical treatment as well as botox injection. The holistic treatment of tic is not only for the tics, but also for the medical illness which sometimes convey the disease.
