Abstract

This study discusses about coming-out which is a process to state that someone has a different sexual orientation than people in general. Coming out itself is often experienced by some homosexuals to go out of the “closet” which is a product of oppression done by the heterosexuals. This study is an attempt to understand the coming out process experienced by Aristotle, who is a Mexican-American also known as Chicano, in a literary work entitled Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe by Benjamin Alire Saenz. This study focuses on the process of coming out of the main character as a homosexual to get out of the “closet”. The concept used in the study is Queer by using the theory of Epistemology of the Closet by Eve Kosofsky Sedgwick which initiates the term "coming out of the closet" assisted by Cass Identity Model proposed by Vivienne Cass which is a homosexual identity formation. Stages faced by each individual differ depending on temperament. The results of this study show that the coming-out process affects Ari's behaviour.
