Abstract

This research aims to reveal the underlying issue of heartbreak in the three poems written by Lang Leav as compiled in her poetry volume Memories, (2015). The writer argues that although there are many different ways that poems are used to depict the feeling of heartbreak, regardless of the different poetic devices used throughout, the underlying symbolism, irony, and metaphor points to the general issue of heartbreak. The methods that were used to conduct this research consisted of New Criticism analysis that employed close reading of the three poems to show how all the symbolism, irony, and metaphor refer to a grand issue, which is heartbreak. This research also compiled several related and previous studies to assist with corroborating the thesis statement. The collection of data was done through a process of clustering, and compiling them to different intrinsic elements (symbolism, irony, and metaphor). The data were then analyzed using the theory of New Criticism. The finding of the study is that all three poems show how heartbreak helps to understand the way millennials perceive the issue of love in modern society
