Abstract

The consumption of the younger generation nowadays is not based on what they need, but what they desire. Mike Featherstone (2007) divides consumer culture into three perspectives: (1) expansion of capitalist commodity production, (2) satisfaction derived from goods related to their socially constructed meaning, (3) as a source of fantasy and pleasure. In the Indonesian e-Sports scene, Multiplayer Online Battle Arena (MOBA) game players, such as Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, are willing to purchase in-game virtual items to increase their status and image. Using qualitative method and ethnography approach on a case study, this undergraduate thesis aims to reveal the consumption issue behind the purchase of in-game items in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and how it can affect players’ status based on Mike Featherstone’s Consumerism Pattern Theory. The findings reveal four (4) segments of consumption in Mobile Legends: Bang Bang that could determine informants’ consumption patterns; (1) consumption of game matches shows the informants’ perception of the in-game events; (2) the consumption of in-game items informs how informants utilize the items and their feelings on owning them; (3) consumption of rank division discloses how informants use rank as markers; and (4) consumption of e-Sports serves as a tool to test their skill while gaining recognition. These four segments would eventually be used as a way to express the informants’ desire and dreams in regards to consumption, and shape their image in society.
