Abstract

In patriarchal Afghani society, sons are valued more than daughters. Families who did not have any male heir often have to raise their daughter as a boy in a tradition called bacha posh. The purpose of the study is to examine how gender performativity is represented in One Half from the East, a novel by Afghan-American author Nadia Hashimi that centers in the life of a young girl named Obayda/ Obayd in Afghanistan who cross-dressed from female to male as a bacha posh. The writer applied gender performativity by Judith Butler in dissecting the issues. The method used in this study is descriptive qualitative method. The writer did close reading to the novel and categorized the events of Obayda/Obayd’s daily life when she/he is transitioning into and living in a certain gender identity. This study has resulted in two findings. First, cross-dressing and masculinity are major themes in gender performativity that is shown by Obayda/ Obayd. Second, the portrayals of bacha posh in the novel represents the male preference that drove young girls to disguise themselves as boys in the patriarchal society of Afghanistan.
