Abstract
This study aims to explore subjectivity power of women in Marie Leprince de Beaumont‘s Beauty and the Beast (1994) and its transformation text Zoe Marriott‘s Barefoot on the Wind (2016) through intertextual process. Marie Leprince de Beaumont‘s Beauty and the Beast has been examined from various perspective by many scholars yet its transformation text Zoe Marriott‘s Barefoot on the Wind has not which triggers new ideas and insights to study female lead characters‘ subjectivity in both literary fairy tales. This study merged subjectivity and intertextuality theories of Julia Kristeva to analyze the texts. Julia Kristeva believed that subjectivity is speaking beings taking part in different signifying process, through the semiotic and the symbolic, and always working in progress. Therefore, close reading and descriptive-interpretive methods were applied in collecting and analyzing the data. According to intertextual process, this study finds that the main female characters in both texts have, through different process, to form their subjectivity. A key of subjectivity process is the balance between semiotic and symbolic. Furthermore, lead characters in both texts are starting to constitute their subjectivity when captivated with the Beast because at the event, their semiotic drives are against the stases or stagnation. However, only one female character of both texts presents correlation on Julia Kristeva‘s subjectivity.
