Abstract

This paper discusses the translation of cultural terms in Indonesia language novel were translated into Japanese. This study uses a novel object Laskar Pelangi by Andrea Hirata which novel translated into Japanese titled Niji no Shonentachi. The purpose of this study was to analyze the transliteration of cultural terms in Japanese, the techniques used in the translations of the cultural terms, and the ideology held by the translator. The writer used qualitative descriptive method in order to reach the purpose of this study. The findings of the data is 82 data. Results of the study showed that there were five categories of cultural terms identified in the novel. Then for the transliteration of culture terms into Japanese used four types of vocabulary, i.e. wago, kango, gairaigo, and konshugo. There were 13 techniques of translation used by the translator in the translations of the cultural terms including the applications of single and double techniques of translation. The most frequently-applied ideology of translation was domestication (59.75%), followed by foreignization (32.93%), and both of them (6.10%).
