Abstract

The issue of revenge is often described and analyzed in adult literature, yet, there has been few researchers focusing on the issue of revenge in children’s literature. Due to the primary legacy of children’s literature, the theme of the texts are purposed to educate children to be better, such as bildungsroman or a coming of age, the main character’s journey from childhood to adolescence. In the journey, there are challenges to be faced including revenge toward others. This study aims to analyze the issue of Nobody Owens’s revenge in Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book (2008). It focuses on how Nobody Owens delivers his revenge, the narrative construction of his revenge, and the underlying structure of the concept of revenge in the novel. To achive these achieves, this study uses qualitative method and structuralist criticism especially actantial theory, functional model, and semiotic square fro A. J. Greimas. The results say that revenge in Neil Gaiman’s The Graveyard Book is initiated by unfair situation and the executor of the revenge is not derived from the owner of the revenge. So, the revenge teaches about everything that we had done will always come back to us and the return of what we had done can be derived from unexpected person and it becomes one of many ways of teachings towards children in order to make them being aware of their emotion and others’.
