Abstract
The aim of this research is to know the hepatoprotective effect of cinnamon bark extract (Cinnamomum burmannii) on histopathological features of the liver induced by 100 mg/kg BW doses of formalin. This experimental animal was used twenty male rats (Rattus norvegicus) aged 2-3 months divided into several treatments control groups K- (CMC-Na 1% + aquades), K+ (100 mg/kg BW formalin + aquades), and treatments groups P1, P2, and P3 with doses of extract of cinnamon bark 250, 500, and 1000 mg/kgBW with a total four rats in each treatment group with an average body weight of 170 gram. Extract of Cinnamon bark was giving before a formalin, and administered through oral gavage. Rats were treated for 21 days. Histopathological evaluation was done to score liver injury based on hepatocyte degeneration, necrosis and portal inflammation using Knodell scoring method with HE stain and 400x magnification. The scoring data was then analyzed using Kruskal Wallis and Mann-Whitney test. The result showed significant different (p < 0.05) among the treatment groups. The conclusion of this research is Cinnamomum burmannii bark extract can protect rat liver from destructive effect of formalin and the best dose was 500 mg/kg BW.
