Abstract

This study aims to analyse the narrative structure of Lapine and Sondheim’s Into the Woods through actantial and functional model proposed by A. J. Greimas and to examine the evidence of moral change gathered from the said structure. The change of morality is chosen as the main issue because the change of morality and the root cause of issues that occur in our world are influenced by each other—it is hoped that by learning the change of morality, the said issues can be avoided or solved, one way or another. The data of the study was gathered through close reading and analysed through Greimas’ actantial and functional model. The actantial scheme was constructed first, then the functional model can be created through the motives presented in the actantial scheme. Then, the data was examined thoroughly in the context of moral change, with the help of several related studies of the same issue stated, gathered from trusted sources. This study results in the causes of the change of morality experienced by several characters, namely The Witch, Baker, Baker’s Wife and Jack.
