Abstract

Makna Talks is an example of podcast that gains good rating in Indonesia. One of these podcast episodes is entitled Pod. 55 Talks about Taking The Leap with Najwa Shihab. This podcast involves a conversation between a host and a guest star, thus this study focuses on the utterances produced by both the host and the guest star that is considered as flouting the maxims of Cooperative Principle. This study aims to identify the flouting maxims that occur in this podcast episode and to describe why those maxims are flouted. The writer used the theory of cooperative principle by Grice (1989) to find out the flouting maxims. This study used qualitative method to analyze and interpret the data. The result of the study shows that there are 46 flouting maxims found and all the types of maxims are flouted in this podcast episode. The writer found that flouting maxim of quantity is the most frequently occurs. It appears 21 times (45.65%) from the total number of flouting maxims. The reason why the maxim of quantity is frequently flouted is because the speaker wants to inform the listeners and to give them detailed information and explanation regarding the topic of discussion.
