Abstract
Children who live with their parents for a long period of time will learn things about their parents from physical appearances, behaviors, even some of their parents’ characteristics. This process happens unconsciously inside children’s mind and might be able to shape children’s attitude and behaviors when they turn to teenagers. The main focus of this thesis is to reveal the respondent’s response to parents’ relationship issue after reading Sharon’s poem “I Go Back to My 1937”. This thesis uses Rosenblatt’s theory of reader-response, which is transactional reader-response. In collecting data, this thesis uses in-depth interview with a fewer respondent. Also, in choosing respondents, this thesis uses random sampling along with students in Universitas Airlangga as its population. The findings of this thesis are each part of the poem reflects a certain experience that respondents have. One respondent could interpret a specific line based on his/her understanding about the poem and self-experience. The use of reader-response in analyzing literary works resulted in a new discovery of meaning that is not from the text.
