Abstract

The goal of this study is to establish the readers‘ response to the song lyrics of It‟s Not Living (If It‟s Not With You) (2018) by The 1975 which is analyzed with psychological reader response theory. The 1975‘s It‟s Not Living (If It‟s Not With You) is an upbeat song that portrays Matty Healy‘s battle with heroin addiction. Without really listening to the lyrics or looking at it, readers and listeners would have an idea that this song is about where two characters are falling in love due to the vibe that gives off. This study was conducted to analyze the readers‘ profile to It‟s Not Living (If It‟s Not With You) song lyrics and to portray the part of the readers‘ understanding to the written verses. Qualitative research method adopted in this study to collect the data. This study used primary data and secondary data. The primary data in this study would be obtained by conducting a focus group reading. In this case, single focus group discussion by David L. Morgan. Different sources, for example, literary books, previous studies, journals, articles, internet, and others related to the study are acquired as the secondary data. Document analysis method is used to collect the data. At the end of this study, it is expected that participants could ―re-symbolize‖ the text through their perceptions and beliefs so the writer of this study could analyze the reaction of the respondents using the psychological reader response theory.
