Abstract

Gender stereotyping has been prominent in literature for centuries up to the present day. This stereotyping commonly follows the norms that are emphasized by patriarchy, which gives more advantages in society to men than women. In popular media, there are specific stereotypes given to fictional women based on their professions. The object of this study is a contemporary American fiction titled The Darkness written by Jason Pinter. This study analyses the gender stereotyping of one of the female characters in the novel based on the patriarchal concepts of women. The aim of this study is to determine how the novel reinforces the patriarchal values by analysing the portrayal of one of its female characters. The method used in this study is qualitative research, which focuses on the interpretation of narration and dialogues throughout the novel. The theory used in this study is Feminist Literary Criticism, especially concepts of traditional gender roles and women stereotype to analyse Paulina Cole’s role as a contemporary American woman. This theory focuses on the ways patriarchal values are reinforced in the literary work. The study reveals how Paulina Cole is stereotyped according to her occupation. She is stereotyped as an ambitious and amoral female journalist by the author. As a professional, she experiences gender inequality and oppression. She is also judged by the society for prioritizing her career over her child. In addition, as a woman, Paulina is still inferior compared to men in the plot of the novel.
