Abstract

The present study was designed to characterize solid inclusion complex of ketoprofen and hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrine. The inclusion complex was made by mixing ketoprofen and hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrine (1:1) together in ethanol, and isopropyl alcohol as anti solvent. The result of phase solubility diagram showed that the complex can be classified as type AL according to Higuchi and Connors. It is assumed that the increase in solubility observed was due to the formation of a 1:1 M inclusion complex. Inclusion complex of ketoprofen-hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrine, physical mixture and single compound of material was characterized using X-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis, and infrared spectrophotometer. Characterization using X-ray diffraction showed that there is a decrease of ketoprofen’s crystallinity degree in the complex compared to the ketoprofen in the physical mixture. The diffractogram of physical mixure showed ketoprofen’s crystallinity pattern mixed with amorf pattern of hydroxypropyl-β-cyclodextrine. The result of differential thermal analysis indicated that the melting point of ketoprofen in the complex is not seen anymore. Characterization’s analysis using the infrared spectrophotometer indicated that there is no absorption in some functional groups owned by ketoprofen. This could be happened because of an interaction between ketoprofen and hydroxypropyl -β- cyclodextrine in the forming of the complex.
