Abstract

Selfishness is a human nature that could arise for any reason yet considered as immoral. In the Pet Sematary by Stephen King, there is the selfishness of the main character. This study argues the selfishness of Louis Creed as the result of his inability to accept death. This study focuses on the selfishness of Louis Creed as the main character as he cannot face death. This study aims to critically examine how the selfishness of Louis Creed arises and its effect. The literary work used is Pet Sematary (1983) by Stephen King. This study applies a qualitative method. The theory used is New Criticism, which focuses on the text itself without looking at the historical background or reader’s opinion. To get a deeper understanding, the researcher conducts a close reading towards the object as the method. The formal elements such as characterization, conflict, and irony called organic unity will organize the analysis. The findings show that the description of selfishness in the Pet Sematary brings negative impacts towards the story and the bad events arise the selfishness.
